Title : Comparative outcomes of Ilizarov surgery alone versus Ilizarov surgery combined with TendoAchilles Lengthening (TAL) in equinus foot deformity
Abstract:
Background: Equinus foot deformity restricts ankle dorsiflexion, disrupting gait and balance. The Ilizarov technique is effective for gradual deformity correction, yet the role of adding TendoAchilles Lengthening (TAL) remains uncertain.
Objective: To compare clinical and functional outcomes between Ilizarov surgery alone and Ilizarov surgery combined with TAL for equinus foot deformity.
Methods: This comparative study was conducted at Liaquat University Hospital, Jamshoro, involving 59 patients with equinus deformity. Participants were divided into two groups: Group A (Ilizarov surgery alone) and Group B (Ilizarov with TAL). All procedures were performed by an experienced orthopedic surgeon. Pre- and postoperative evaluations included clinical and radiological assessments, operative duration, hospital stay, and postoperative complications.
Results: Most participants were young males from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. The loaddition of TAL increased operative time but did not significantly influence hospital stay or complication rates. Both groups achieved satisfactory deformity correction and improved ankle function.
Conclusion: Ilizarov surgery either alone or with Tendoachilles Lengthening is an effective treatment for equinus foot deformity. While TAL adds operative complexity, it does not alter short-term recovery or complications. A personalized surgical approach and long-term follow-up are recommended to ensure optimal outcomes.
