Title : Fostering leadership and innovation in Total Hip Arthroplasty(THA): Insights from a systematic review and reflective analysis of orthopaedic surgeon training programs

Abstract:

Background: Orthopaedic surgeon training programs focused on leadership and innovation play a crucial role in promoting the adoption of new technologies and care delivery models in Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA). This study aims to systematically review the literature on such programs and provide a reflective analysis of their impact on innovation and leadership development in the context of hip replacement surgery.

Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases, covering publications from 2010 to 2023. Search terms related to total hip arthroplasty, surgical education, healthcare innovation, and leadership development were used. Additionally, a reflective analysis based on personal experience as a participant in an orthopaedic leadership program with a focus on hip surgery was incorporated.

Results: The systematic review identified 7 relevant studies. Key themes emerged, including the programs' role in developing leadership skills specific to implementing new THA techniques and technologies, promoting a culture of innovation in hip arthroplasty, and addressing challenges in adopting minimally invasive and robot-assisted surgical approaches. The reflective analysis highlighted strengths in fostering collaboration among hip surgeons and encouraging novel approaches to complex primary and revision THA cases, while also identifying areas for improvement such as more explicit integration of change management and health economics training.

Conclusion: Orthopaedic surgeon training programs focused on leadership and innovation have shown promise in nurturing these qualities and accelerating the adoption of new technologies and care models in total hip arthroplasty. However, there is a need for more robust evaluation and the integration of comprehensive leadership frameworks tailored to the unique challenges of implementing innovation in hip replacement surgery. Future research should examine long-term impacts on patient-reported outcomes, complication rates, and alignment with broader strategies to advance the quality and value of THA care globally.
