Abstract:

Introduction: Knee pain is the second most common musculoskeletal symptom of all age groups and found to have an impact on people's day-to-day activities and quality of their lives. Although several risk factors are associated with knee pain, their association with life style factors at Teaching Hospital Jaffna is yet to be revealed.
Objectives: To assess associated life style factors among the patients attending the Orthopedic Clinic in Teaching Hospital, Jaffna.
Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional Institutional-based study was conducted among the 426 with knee pain. The systematic random sampling method was used to select the participants from orthopedic clinic. Ethical clearance was obtained from Ethical Review Committee, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data and data were analyzed by using SPSS 20. A numerical pain scale was used to find the severity of knee pain (Mild 1-3, Moderate 4-6, Severe 7-10). The chi-square test was performed to find out the association between the life style factors and with severity of knee pain.
Results: In this study major were not climbing more than one floor per a day (89.2%), having occasionally knee pain while rest (94.1%),  work (57.0%) and walk, run or exercise (51.2%). Most of them were walk to bed with knee pain(72.5%). More than half of them (66%) knee pain trigger with moving activities. Most of them (92.5%) knee pain was not associated with foot wear. Most of them were not use alcohol (81.9%) and smoking (83.3%). A statistically significant relationship was present between the severity of knee pain and Climbing more than one floor per a day, Knee pain while rest, Knee pain while work, Knee pain while walk, run or exercise, Walk to bed with pain, Triggering activities and type of foot wear.
Conclusion:  Smoking and alcohol were not cause for produced the knee pain. The severity of pain shows a statistically significant relationship with various life style factors. It is recommended to the target group to avoid long standing and long time sitting by bending the knee based on their occupation.
