Efficacy of smart patches and artificial intelligence algorithms in postoperative monitoring and infection detection: A meta-analysis

Speaker at World Orthopedics Conference 2026 - Agustin Tellez Duarte
Artritis and Orthopaedic Clinic Cozumel, Mexico
Title : Efficacy of smart patches and artificial intelligence algorithms in postoperative monitoring and infection detection: A meta-analysis

Abstract:

Objective: To evaluate the clinical efficacy, diagnostic accuracy, and feasibility of integrating smart patches with sensors and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for postoperative wound monitoring and the early detection of Surgical Site Infections (SSI).

Methods: A selection of 17 recent studies on biosensor modalities, machine learning, and closed-loop systems was systematically analyzed. Data on diagnostic performance (AUROC, sensitivity), monitored physiological parameters, and clinical workload reduction were extracted.

Results: AI models, particularly LSTM networks, achieved an AUROC of 0.954 and a sensitivity of 0.920 for SSI identification. Image analysis using Vision Transformers achieved an accuracy of 0.73 and an AUROC of 0.81. Clinically, the use of these devices demonstrated a 99.2% agreement with conventional medical assessments and reduced the manual chart review workload by over 90%.

Conclusion: Smart patches and AI represent a disruptive technology with high precision for predicting and detecting SSIs. Although they are in early validation stages and present risks of bias, they offer significant potential, particularly in resource-limited settings.
