Title : Short-term to mid-term functional outcomes and survivorship of robotic-assisted partial knee arthroplasty
Abstract:
Background: Partial knee arthroplasty has been thought to be a practical alternative surgical approach for isolated compartmental osteoarthritis. However, its survivorship is compromised by inaccuracy in component placement and post-operative limb malalignment; robotic surgery has been introduced to minimize such technical errors. The aim of this paper was to evaluate PROMs and survivorship with a minimum of 1-year follow-up of Robotic-Assisted Partial Knee Arthroplasty (RAPKA).
Methods: A retrospective review of patients who underwent RAPKA between January 2018 and January 2023. Patients received a fixed-bearing medial (M) or lateral (L) Unicompartmental Knee Arthroplasty (UKA), Patello Femoral Arthroplasty (PFA), or bicompartmental knee arthroplasty (BicomKA; PFA plus MUKA). A complete clinical evaluation with PROMs such as KOOS, OKS, and MFJS was done for all patients pre and postoperatively.
Results: 118 knees of 91 patients (73 females and 18 males) underwent (53 unilateral MUKA, 23 bilateral MUKA, 6 LUKA, one patient with MUKA and contralateral LUKA, 4 unilateral BicomKA and 1 bilateral BicomKA, 2 bilateral PFA and 1 unilateral PFA) with a mean follow-up of 4.27 years (1 – 6.42). The mean post-operative KOOS, OKS, and MFJS were 91.20, 42.78, and 89.89, respectively. 90.1% patients on the Likert Scale were satisfactory. However, 2 of 118 knees operated on were noted to have MUKA failure (1.3%), caused by aseptic loosening of components.
Conclusion: RAPKA improves PROMs and provides good survivorship at short-term to mid-term follow-up, clinching satisfactory clinical outcomes with minimal risk of postoperative complications.
