Spondyloarthropathies are arthritis conditions that affect the bones in your spine and adjacent joints. They can cause pain and injury to joints such as the spine, shoulders, and hips. Arthritis causes swelling, redness, and discomfort in the joints in your body. It's something that happens to a lot of people as they become older. Spondyloarthropathies cause arthritis where your bones meet soft tissues like ligaments and tendons meet bones and muscles. "Ankylosing spondylitis" is the most frequent type. It targets the joints that connect the bones of your spine (vertebrae). Spondyloarthritis affects about 1% of the adult population in the United States. This equates to approximately 1.7 million people. It could be genetic in some cases. It is up to three times more common in men than in women. The signs and symptoms can appear as early as your late teens. The most prevalent symptom of spondyloarthropathy is back pain.
